Choosing Granite

Is granite a good choice for a busy kitchen?

Yes. Granite resists heat and scratches, and speckled or mid toned stones hide everyday crumbs and water spots well. With occasional sealing it stays easy to live with.

How is granite different from quartz?

Granite is fully natural stone with one of a kind patterns and good heat tolerance. Quartz is engineered from crushed quartz and resin, offers a consistent pattern and typically does not need sealing, but its resin can scorch under hot pans.

Should I pick my actual slab?

Whenever possible, yes. Slabs of the same granite name can vary a lot. Seeing the real slab lets you approve the pattern and seam locations before cutting.

What edge profile should I choose?

An eased edge is simple and resists chips. Bullnose is comfortable against forearms. Decorative profiles like ogee add a classic look but take a little more cleaning.

Planning and Installation

Do my cabinets need to be replaced?

Not usually. Sturdy, level cabinets can carry granite. Older units with water damage may need reinforcement first.

When does templating happen?

After the cabinets are installed and fastened, and once you have chosen the sink, faucet and cooktop. Templates depend on those exact details.

How much overhang can an island have?

Modest overhangs can be unsupported, but deeper seating overhangs need brackets or steel supports to prevent cracks. The right amount depends on slab thickness and layout.

What should I do before installation day?

Clear the counters and nearby cabinets, move small appliances out and arrange for plumbing to be disconnected and reconnected.

Care, Sealing and Repairs

How often does granite need sealing?

It depends on the stone. Do a water drop test every few months. If water darkens the stone within several minutes, reseal.

What cleaners are safe for granite?

Warm water with mild dish soap or a stone specific cleaner. Avoid vinegar, lemon cleaners, bleach and abrasive powders.

Can chips and cracks be repaired?

Most chips can be filled with tinted resin and polished. Many cracks can be stabilized and filled once the cause, often a support problem, is corrected.

Can stains be removed?

Most stains can be drawn out with a poultice matched to the stain type, followed by resealing.
